The short version: We collect only the minimum data needed to run the app.
Your location data never leaves your device in a way that identifies you personally.
We don't sell your data. We don't run ads. We use RevenueCat for subscriptions (they handle
payment data). Hazard reports are anonymous.
1. Who We Are
Untethered Moto is an Android motorcycle navigation application developed and operated
by Chris Mowers ("we," "us," or "our"), operating under the brand Untethered Moto.
This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the Untethered Moto
mobile application (the "App").
The following data is stored locally in the App and never transmitted to our servers in a form that identifies you:
Location data - Used for navigation, map display, hazard proximity, and weather. Processed on-device and via our self-hosted routing API (see section 3). Never stored on our servers with a user identifier.
Bike profiles - Vehicle name, type, odometer, and fuel log entries.
Ride recordings - GPS tracks, speed data, and elevation from recorded rides. Stored only in your device's local storage.
Trip plans - Saved multi-waypoint trip data.
App settings and preferences - Theme, navigation preferences, DND settings, etc.
Search history - Recent destination searches, stored locally only.
2b. Information Transmitted to Our Servers
When you use navigation features requiring internet connectivity, the App sends data to our self-hosted API infrastructure:
Route calculations - Start and destination coordinates sent to our Valhalla routing server to calculate a route. We do not log these requests in a way that associates them with an individual user.
Geocoding searches - Search text and your approximate location sent to our Photon geocoding server to find places.
Map tile requests - Tile coordinates (not your location) sent to our Martin tile server to download map tiles.
Hazard reports - Road hazard location, type, and a random anonymous device ID. No name, email, or account information is attached. The device ID resets if you reinstall the App.
Crash reports - If the App crashes, a report including the error, app version, and device model may be sent to our server. No location or personal data is included.
Feedback submissions - If you submit feedback via the App, the text you write is sent to us. No location or account information is attached unless you choose to include it.
2c. Subscription and Payment Data
If you subscribe to Untethered Moto Pro, payment is processed by
RevenueCat
and the Google Play Store. We do not store or process payment card information.
RevenueCat assigns you a customer ID and shares only your subscription status (active/expired/trial)
with the App. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for details on their data practices.
3. Our Infrastructure
All backend services (routing, geocoding, map tiles, hazards, and the API) are self-hosted
by us on our own hardware. We use Cloudflare as a DNS and CDN provider for the public-facing
domain. Our servers are located in the United States.
We do not use Google Maps, Apple Maps, HERE Maps, or any third-party mapping provider
that collects user location data. Our map tiles come from OpenStreetMap data, served
by our own infrastructure.
4. Permissions We Request
Location (Fine / Background) - Required for navigation, map display, and ride recording. Background location is used only to maintain GPS accuracy during active navigation or recording when the screen is locked. We never track your location in the background unless navigation or recording is explicitly active.
Do Not Disturb Access - Required to activate Android's Do Not Disturb mode at your chosen speed threshold. We do not read your notifications.
Contacts (optional) - Requested only if you choose to add an emergency contact for the crash detection feature. We read only the name and phone number of the contact you select and store it locally on your device.
SMS (optional) - Requested only if you enable crash detection with an emergency contact. Used solely to send a crash alert SMS to your designated contact.
Bluetooth - Used to detect when a Bluetooth audio device (helmet, headset) connects, to trigger auto-play. We do not read Bluetooth device data.
Foreground Service - Required to maintain GPS and navigation in the background when the App is minimized. Android displays a persistent notification while this is active.
5. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information
from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information,
please contact us and we will delete it.
6. Data Retention
On-device data - Retained until you delete it from the App or uninstall the App. Clearing app data or reinstalling removes all locally stored data.
Server-side API logs - Routing and geocoding requests are not persistently logged. Server access logs (standard web server logs) are retained for up to 30 days for security and debugging purposes and then deleted.
Hazard reports - Automatically expire 24 hours after submission. Three community dismissals remove a hazard immediately.
Crash reports and feedback - Retained until reviewed and resolved, then deleted.
RevenueCat data - Subject to RevenueCat's own retention policy.
7. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including:
The right to access the data we hold about you
The right to correct inaccurate data
The right to delete your data
The right to object to or restrict processing
Since most data is stored only on your device, you can exercise most of these rights
directly in the App (delete rides, remove bikes, clear search history, etc.) or by

Spotify - If you connect Spotify, media control is handled via Spotify's own SDK. We do not read your Spotify library or listening history. Privacy Policy
National Weather Service (NWS) - Weather data is fetched from NOAA's NWS public API using your location. NWS is a US government service and does not track users.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the
"Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be communicated
via an in-app notice. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance
of the updated policy.
